Topic of Website – Why Important?

By Leif Bryan

Most people who decide to have a website encounter a tough decision – the topic of their website. With billions of pages of web content out there centered on billions of ideas, finding the right topic is not an easy choice. This is especially true for those who have blogs since new content is always needed. Having the right topic is just the beginning of having a great website.

Finding a Topic

Where can you find the topic of your site? You can search on the internet, look on television, read the newspaper, or find out what people are interested in. While those sources are good, the first question you should ask yourself is, “What do I enjoy?”

What you enjoy is the best topic you can write about because you have a passion toward it. Why write about something you do not care for? Better yet, why write about something you do not know anything about? You will get bored at your own website. This will result in a website with bad content.

Avoid Topic Pitfalls

In most cases, your website will be used to earn money through Google Adsense or some other revenue earning system. The worst topic to write about is how to make money. Other people will tell you that topic is a good place to start, but when you do a search on that topic, it has been way overdone. The content is very repetitive which means that your article about making money has a significant less chance of being looked at. Plus, how to make money is not your expertise. It is best to stay away from writing such an article.

Another big issue is copying someone else content. Besides the fact that taking something that does not belong to you is stealing, it also lowers your website’s credibility. If you want to use someone else’s article, first read the privacy terms and conditions of the website to make sure it is accepted. Then, make sure you credit the author for their work. A good example of a website in which that is accepted is www.articlecity.com. Still, be sure to read the terms and conditions.

Too Broad of a Topic

Having a broad topic can make your website unfocused and confusing. For instance, a website with a topic of sports may not be as good as a website talking about a specific sport. There are exceptions to the rule. If you have a team of writers where each person has a passion about a different sport, that can work. But it’s a good idea not to make the topic too broad and to make the topic focused on something particular.

No Topic at All

There are others who start a website with so many different topics that it is hard to find just one. One second you are reading about sports, but in the navigation is an article about wildlife. That can be very intimidating and frustrating for a visitor of your website. It is clear that there is no centralized theme. Most readers would not be interested in coming back to your site unless they stumbled upon it again.

In the end

Having a topic for your website is very important. In fact, along with web design, it might be the most important part of the website. Making sure that your topic is a good one takes time. Do not hesitate to brainstorm ideas. Take your time. In the end, the topic of your website can make or break your website.
