Things to Know Before Getting a Website
By Leif Bryan
Congratulations! You have decided to get a website. You are about to join millions of others who too have their own website. But before you jump right in and start creating your website, there are several things to consider before you start
Identify Your Goal
What is the goal of your website? Many people start websites without a clear objective in mind. The results have been disorganized websites that are visually and materially lacking. But a good website is one that has a core – a clear objective from the home page through the various pages of the website.
What are you trying to do? How can your website be an asset to others? These are also questions you can ask yourself. If you are a business trying to expand, think of how you want to expand your business and how your site will be an asset in this. If your site is informative, how can you keep the information updated and relevant? If your website is a way to use Google Adsense or other advertisement programs, think about a subject that you are passionate about and will appeal to people.
Basically, think about what you want before you start and hit a dead end. Writing your goals and ideas down is an effective way to organize your thoughts and in coming up with a main objective.
Identify Your Audience
There are over six billion people in the world and to be honest, everyone will not be interested in your website. However, there are a large number of people who will be. Aim for those people. Make your site appealing to a select group. What are they looking for in your website? What information will be beneficial for them? More importantly, what will keep them coming back to your website?
Here’s a good idea: find out what people want in a website. Look around the internet; look at blogs, message boards, and forums. You can even look at other websites that are similar to what you want. What makes their site stand out? Do not try to copy them. Rather, find a way to make your site better for your audience.
Market Your Website
So you have a goal and you have identified your audience. Problem is that besides for you and a few other people, no one knows about your website. Therefore, there is a need to get your website out there. This is where marketing your website comes into play.
The big thing to remember is to use all occasions to promote your website. Put your website on your email signature. Make cards with your website on it. Tell others by word of mouth. Become a member of a message board or forum and advertise your website.
