Advantages and Disadvantages of Blogs

By Leif Bryan

In a world where one man's thought is another's idea, expressing one's mind is becoming more and more of a desire. With the availability of blogs, people are successfully spreading their ideas and thoughts to the public and in some cases generating income from relevant ads placed therein. With this new thing available to everyone, what are the advantages and disadvantages of blogs? Let's go over a few of each.

The advantages of blogs include the following:

(1) Blogs are an excellent way to share knowledge with others on both a personal and business level. Since blogs can be updated very easily, they are used to put fresh ideas on it on a daily basis.

(2) Blogs can be used as a portfolio because they allow writers and others to showcase their talent and expertise. Writers are giving previews of their books and their work by using blogs.

(3) Blogs allow the reader to get in the mind of the author(s) and company. Since blogs do not have to be formal, readers can get a rough idea of what a person is feeling and thinking.

(4) Blogs can be used to provide feedback, ideas, and concepts. Blog hosts have free message boards and bulletins that can give people the opportunity to comment on what they are reading.

The disadvantages of blogs include the following:

(1) Many people do not have anything interesting to say. Therefore, the blogs will become boring and will lose appeal to potential readers. Nothing is worst than a boring blog except for one that is not updated on a regular basis.

(2) Blogs are easy to start because they can generally be started for free and the layouts are already provided. However, they are hard to maintain because they require information to be added on a continual basis. This can be time consuming and difficult for some.

(3) Blogs should be used on the personal level. When used on the business level, it makes  company look disorganized. Blogs as the main site for a company is a big mistake.
